New York State Safety & Emissions Inspection

The New York Department of Motor Vehicles (NY DMV) requires vehicles to complete both a safety and emissions inspection every 12 months. The inspection must be done before the expiration date of the current inspection sticker, or whenever a vehicle becomes registered in a different name.

Low-enhanced emissions test:

Emissions inspections are usually carried out at the same time as safety inspections. This inspection tests systems in your vehicle like:

  • Catalytic converter
  • Exhaust gas recirculation valve
  • Positive crankcase ventilation system
  • Air injection system
  • Evaporative emissions control
  • Fuel inlet restrictor
  • Thermostatic air cleaner

Why do I need to have my car inspected?

Well, aside from the peace of mind you get from knowing that your vehicle is in safe operating condition, there are a number of other reasons to ensure your vehicle is inspected annually: Without up-to-date emissions and safety inspection, you cannot renew your vehicle’s registration.

Vehicles with no inspection sticker or an expired inspection sticker can receive fines
Sticker expired for less than 60 days:
$25 to $50
Sticker expired for more than 60 days:
$50 to $100
No inspection sticker:
$50 to $100

You will also be charged a $88 mandatory state surcharge in addition to all the fines above, plus any additional fines assessed by the police or the NY DMV.
