Dynamic Performance Control Makes the Rear Differential Its Own System

On many E71 models the rear differential is an active unit with internal clutch packs that vector torque side to side, and it needs specific fluid and a module that knows what it is doing.

Treat it like a normal differential and you will damage it. Watch for a shudder in tight turns, a drivetrain warning, or a car that feels like it is fighting itself at low speed in a parking lot. The 2011–2014 Driveshaft Recall Is Worth a VIN Check

Front driveshaft joints on this generation were the subject of a federal campaign, and many vehicles were never brought in for it.

In March 2017, BMW filed NHTSA recall 17V138000 covering 121,909 vehicles, including 2011–2014 X6 xDrive35i, xDrive50i and X6 M models, over a front universal joint that could fail and leave the front wheels without drive. Check the VIN. Do not assume it was handled. On any high-mileage X6 we also inspect the driveshaft flex disc and center bearing, since a vibration that arrives around 45 mph usually starts at one of those two parts.

Turbo V8 Models Carried a Circuit Board Recall as Well

If your X6 has the twin-turbo V8, there is a second campaign to check alongside the driveshaft one.

In April 2018, BMW filed NHTSA recall 18V248000 covering 47,806 vehicles, including 2011–2012 X6 models, for a turbocharger circuit board that could overheat and raise the risk of fire. Recalls aside, the N63-family V8 asks for attention to valve stem seals, oil consumption, and coolant lines as mileage climbs. Oil consumption, most of all. We measure it properly rather than guessing, then quote the work in the order it actually matters, because an owner who knows the real number can decide what to do about it.

Staggered Tires and Brooklyn Pavement Are an Expensive Combination

The X6 runs wider rear tires than front on most trims, which means you cannot rotate them, and the rears wear out on their own schedule.
