To many people, the check engine light may come across as a nuisance, but in reality, it is a highly effective tool for figuring out a problem with the vehicle. But do you know what it means and how it works? In this article, we’ll talk about what causes the check engine light to come on. You can always contact us to schedule an appointment if your check engine light has come on.

What Does It Mean?

Modern cars have a computer and a diagnostic system onboard, referred to as OBD II. The check engine light is part of the diagnostic system. Whether you have an SUV or a sedan, most if not all cars produced after the mid-90s have this system built into it, as it was part of the United State’s goal to lower emissions.

The exhaust and the engine are the system’s main components that need to be monitored for emissions. If there is a problem with any one of these units, like even a bad spark plug or a catalytic converter that isn’t functioning, there will be respective trouble codes sent to the onboard computer system where it is stored. The check engine light is triggered as a means to alert the driver of an issue. A technician can then use a code reader or a scan tool to pull the codes and figure out what is tripping them.

Common Vehicle Issues Detected

The exhaust and the engine both have a couple of complex components of their own, which means that the onboard diagnostic system is monitoring many aspects of the systems. The engine check light can appear on the dashboard even if your gas cap is loose. If that’s not the reason, then it is something more complex. A bad spark plug, oxygen sensor, ignition coils, mass airflow sensor, fuel injector, thermostat, purge control valve can trigger the code. If the mass airflow sensor fails or the spark plugs aren’t working properly, it will trigger the check engine light, but the vehicle will also run rough or have rough idle.

Since there could be many possible issues tripping the check engine light, it would be a good idea to have our technicians examine the vehicle with a state-of-the-art scan tool.
